Walker tapped to chair fundraiser

Relay for Life teams forming

POSTED: August 4, 2010 4:00 a.m.

A local volunteer admits the nation’s current economic situation has taken a toll on the ability for non-profits to raise money.

But Jay Walker said now is the time to stop placing blame on the failing economy and step up to support those in need.

Walker recently agreed to chair Dawson County Relay for Life, a nationwide initiative that raises funds for cancer research through local efforts.

“In 2002, we raised $80 shy of $104,000 for Relay,” said Walker, who last chaired the event that year. “Sure, the economy was booming then, but what we need to do, and all these organizations, is to be careful not to use that economy story as a crutch and I think sometimes some people do.”

Dawson County Relay for Life will be May 20 and 21, 2011 at Dawson County High School. The all-night event features entertainment, food and festivities provided by local teams, whose members take turns walking throughout the evening to raise money.

Walker said planning early for next year’s event is going to be the key to reaching the group’s fundraising goal.

Local businesses, civic organizations, churches and business leaders should expect to hear from Relay for Life volunteers over the next several months who will focus this year on involving the entire community in the effort.

“Just about everybody has been touched by cancer in some way,” Walker said. “What we’ll be asking is if they can’t write a check, can they hold an event like a car wash to raise some money.”

Team are now forming for next year’s Relay for Life. The first team meeting will be held Sept. 13.
