Riverview Middle School hosted a passing camp July 20 with two other schools, White County and Riverwatch.

White County and Riverwatch gave the Eagles a really good test. Both teams were loaded with great athletes that really stretched the Riverview secondary on defense.

“I thought the camp went really well for us. This gave us an opportunity to see really good players from other teams. This is what we wanted to see from this passing league. It allowed us to see how some of our kids did in the heat of the moment,” said Head Coach Mark Thomason.

Thomason praised the play of several of his Eagle players: “I thought Gavin Brown had some nice catches, as well as Kegan Matthews. Austin Martin showed some nice hands and seventh grader Allen Sanchez and Tyler Butler both had a good day.

“On defense Saul Mendoza played well. Josh Sage and Travis Burnett showed some good coverage skills in the secondary.

“Some kids stepped up and others need some work. We learned some things that will turn out to be really good coaching points for our kids. We definitely know that we have some work to do before our first game, but it is really nice to know what we need to tweak ahead of time.”

The Eagles will open the season with cross-county rival Dawson County Middle School on Aug. 28.

The game will be played at Tiger Stadium at Dawson County High School.
