Eagles attend camp

Look forward to new season

POSTED: July 21, 2010 4:00 a.m.

The Riverview Middle School Eagle football team is busily preparing for the upcoming 2010 campaign. Head Coach Mark Thomason’s team participated in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes passing camp at North Hall Middle School last Wednesday.

Schools from White County, Chestatee, West Hall, Flowery Branch and East Hall took part in the 7 on 7 passing camp.

“I was very happy with the way the guys competed,” Thomason said. “They fought hard and played hard. We were the smallest school there, but we still played well.”

Score was not kept at the camp. The Eagles played every team very evenly, with the exception of East Hall, which was the first game of the day and the team looked a little shell-shocked, according to Thomason.

“I thought both quarterbacks threw the ball well,” Thomason said of quarterbacks Zach Buchan and Tyler Butler.

The Riverview coach praised the play of receivers Austin Martin, Rhys Adams, Gavin Brown and Jacob Lord.

Defensive back Saul Mendoza had a good camp on defense. Along with Alan Sherwood, who intercepted two passes, and linebacker Josh Sage, the defense held it’s own against the bigger schools, according to Thomason.

“I thought they did a great job all day playing in space,” Thomason said.

The team will resume workouts with a full squad this week. Riverview will hold workouts this week at the school from 4-6 p.m. each day.

On Tuesday, the team held its own passing league with White County and Riverwatch middle schools.
