Lions select new leader

Wants to expand hearing aid program

POSTED: July 21, 2010 4:00 a.m.

A new leader in the Dawsonville Lions Club has plans to expand the scope of the service organization’s mission.

“I’d really like to see the club focus on our hearing aid program,” said Club President David James, who was selected last month to lead the club for the next year.

As one of the oldest service organizations in Dawson County, the Dawsonville Lions Club is known for its efforts to prevent blindness, in addition to participation in local, state and national service initiatives.

Collection boxes for used glasses and hearing aids are located throughout the community. Lenses and hearing aids are reconditioned to help those with hearing and vision impairments around the world.

The Lions also help provide eye examinations and glasses to school children requiring assistance in the county and sponsors the school system’s student of the month recognitions at the local middle schools.

Additionally, the club’s annual golf tournament each fall helps fund scholarships for six local students and assists with the club’s humanitarian efforts in the county.

James said the club will continue its current efforts and hopes to recruit new members in the coming months.

“We have about 65 members now,” he said.

The club meets at 7 p.m. the first and third Mondays of each month at Ryan’s in Dawsonville. Dinner begins at 6:30 p.m.
