War Hill Park may get grant for improvements

POSTED: July 14, 2010 4:00 a.m.

The Georgia Department of Natural Recources has recommended Dawson County for an $87,500 federal grant to make further renovations and improvements at War Hill Park.

The 50-percent match grant was made possible through the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund, which is administered through Georgia DNR.

The War Hill Park was one of 14 projects in the state of Georgia to be recommended for renovation, acquisition and development of existing properties.

Recommendations for the recreation grant program are finalized by the Department of Interior.

Georgia DNR Commissioner Chris Clark said the state is “fortunate to have elected officials who prioritize parks and recreation ... during this economically challenging time.”

Projects were scored based on their proximity to people and communities, conservation efforts and threat of land being lost to development.

In 2008, Dawson County was given a similar grant for War Hill Park. It used the federal dollars to upgrade camping facilities, add sand for the beach and reconstruct the park’s handicap-accessible fishing pier.

The county has a lease agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to maintain the park.

War Hill Park is open daily from daylight to sundown for day-use visitors.
