The Tiger basketball team has finished its summer basketball camp play. The team was very successful and finished the summer with a record of 23-11.

Last Tuesday, Head Coach Thad Burgess and his squad played South Forsyth and came away with a 20-point win in their last game of the summer.

The team played in several team camps, including Auburn University, Birmingham-Southern and Forsyth County. Dawson also played individual games with Chestatee and Gilmer County.

“I felt we needed to play a difficult schedule with a lot of games since we have some holes to fill with new players. I thought our summer could not have gone any better. A key as we look toward next year will be to find some depth and experience at the point guard position. Getting away and going to different places allowed our guys to get closer and build team chemistry going into next season,” Burgess said about his team’s 34 summer games.

The Tiger head coach also mentioned assistant coach Wes Greer.

“Wes has been our assistant for the last four years. He has been a tremendous help. He has a great relationship with our players and is very loyal to me and the basketball program,” Burgess said.

The Tigers will feature five seniors on next year’s team, Levi Wilson, Ethan Brown, Stephen Johnson, Jacob Evans and Kaleb Holbrook.

“Levi continues to be a consistent player and a leader on our team. On Kaleb, we are hoping to get him back after he suffered a knee injury last season. He would be a key with his leadership and would give us experience at point guard. Jacob continues to be our leading scorer and rebounder. He had a great summer. Stephen made the move from inside to the wing this summer. He will give experience and scoring from the perimeter. Ethan was a great addition to the team this summer. He gives us an athletic and smart player in the mix in our inside game. Glad to have him back in the program,” Burgess said.

Juniors will include Logan Lewis and Roman Stroud.

Sophomores on the team this summer were Tyler Dominy, Will Anglin, Gunnar Armstrong, Mitchell Putnam and Grant Shope.

Jonathan Sanderson was the lone freshman on the summer roster.

Following is a rundown of the underclassmen, according to Burgess:

Logan Lewis and Roman Stroud — “Both had a really good summer, with much improvement with strength and aggressiveness. Both should be able to battle defensively and rebounding.”

Tyler Dominy — “Has exceptional talent. We made him a point guard and he did a great job this summer. He will learn this position under fire.”

Will Anglin — “Will was our biggest surprise this summer. He always gives 100 percent effort and will play a big role next season for us.”

Gunnar Armstrong and Mitchell Putnam — “Their offseason will be very important for these two. Both had a good summer.”

Grant Shope — “Will give us a lot of depth.”

Jonathan Sanderson —“Should be a factor as he matures and gains experience.

“We have a very dedicated and determined group to continue the success of the last four years. We will take off as a team the rest of the summer until conditioning starts when school starts. Our kids are tired after our challenging schedule in June. I am very proud of how they handled themselves throughout the summer,” Burgess added.
