More than 40 future Dawson County Lady Tiger basketball players took part in a five-day basketball camp last week at Rock Creek Sports Complex.

Camp Director Tina Brown was excited that so many young players attended camp this year.

The camp was open to girls age 7-14. Brown and her staff divided the girls into age groups to provide better age-appropriate instruction.

“We are really going to work several phases of the game to help make them better basketball players,” said Brown. “These girls are going to learn some fundamental skills, which we hope they will take home and work on.”

Fundamentals stressed at the camp were ball-handling, passing, rebounding, form shooting, lay-ups, screen and rolls, offensive moves, agilities and defense.

Helping Brown with instruction were Head Varsity Girls Coach Steve Sweat, Jonathon Tinsley, Frank Brown, Tonya Porter and Steven Moates.

“Everyday they seemed to get better. The coaches on our staff are great teachers of the game. The girls worked really hard and got better each day.

Hopefully they will take some of these fundamentals they have learned this week and work on them at home,” Brown said.

Each day the girls competed for several different awards that would be handed out at the end of the week. Competitions were held for 1-on-1, free throws, hot shot and best camper.

“There were some great battles especially in the 1-on-1 games,” Brown said. “Each of the campers tried really hard in the games.”

It was a week chock full of basketball fundamentals and fun. As each camper left the gym with a tired smile on their faces, each one of them departed with the knowledge that they had become better basketball players over the course of the last five days, according to Brown.
