The Tour of Atlanta bike race made a stop in Dawsonville during the Memorial Day weekend. Over 50 riders from throughout the United States participated in the event sanctioned by USA cycling.

There was a wide range of categories for both male and female riders, which included  Clydesdale (men 200+ pounds), Athena (women 150+ pounds), Juniors, Tandem, Single Speed and Road Bikes (includes bikes that are not with tri-bars).

Age groups for riders were made-up of 18 and under, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 50+.

The 2010 Georgia Cup Bike Race Series for competitive riders varied over a wide spectrum to include Category 4 and 5 riders, the Elite Category 3 and Masters, as well as Pro-12 riders.

The race was broken up into five stages beginning at Gold Creek Golf Club on Friday evening. Stage two began at Rock Creek Park at 8 a.m. Saturday morning.  The next three stages were all ran from Gold Creek.

Stage 1 was a 6.5 mile time trial.

Stage 2 was a high difficulty ride with a steep .65 mile climb each lap with an uphill finish.

Stage 3 was a race for all levels over a rolling terrain.

Stage 4 included lots of twists and turns, ups and downs with a sprint to the finish.

Stage 5 was composed of 5-mile laps that gave each racer a chance to break away from the pack. The last stage was the most difficult with a climb up the west side of Burnt Mountain and with a sprint to the finish over flat terrain.

Racers had to battle strong thunderstorms and wet conditions throughout most of the weekend.

Each rider looked exhausted at the end of the 5-stage race. Despite the wet conditions, there were no wrecks during the weekend races, according to officials.

The riders will head to Rome on June 12 and 13 for the next race.
