Davenport to compete this week

Rush Davenport will compete in the state track meet this Friday and Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Jefferson.

  

Davenport will be the lone representative from Head Coach Arron Haynes Tiger track team after last week’s Region 8-AA meet in Jefferson.

  

Davenport qualified for the state meet after a runner-up finish in the 400-meters. He crossed the finish line with a time of 52.32.

  

Winning the event was Stephen Pluhar from Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville with a time of 51.56.

  

Davenport will run at 12:55 p.m. this Friday in his qualifying heat. The finals for the event will be held on Saturday.

  

The Tiger team finished in eighth place at last week’s region meet and earned 27 points.

  

North Oconee won the team championship after earning 143 points.

  

Oglethorpe County came in second with a team total of 105 points.

  

Several Tigers competed in the finals, which were held on Monday, May 3.

  

In the pole vault, Luke Parks picked up two points with a vault of 10’6” for a seventh place finish. The winner in the event was University of Tennessee signee Tyler Porter from Jefferson. Porter had a vault of 13’6.”

  

Jonathan Erickson finished in sixth place in the 1600-meters with a time of 5:08 and fourth place in the 3200-meters with a time of 10:59.30.

  

Erickson picked up three points in the 1600-meters and five points in the 3200-meters.

  

The 4x100 meter relay team, made up of Art Brown, Zach Wilkins, Tyler Thurmond and Davenport qualified for the finals with a time of 46.54. The team was disqualified in the finals.

  

Tiger Tyler Thurmond finished sixth in the 800-meters with a time of 2:14.32. Thurmond gained three points for his team with the finish.

  

Ian Wraga of North Oconee won the event with a time of 2:02.39.

  

Picking up five points, with a fourth  place finish, narrowly missing a trip to state, was Zach Wilkins in the 300-meter hurdles. Wilkins crossed the finish line with a time of 42.18 in the finals.

  

In the 200-meters, Davenport finished eighth in the finals and earned a single point to round out the point total for the Tigers.

  

Davenport had a time of 24.55 in the event.

  

Each team is allowed to have two members compete in each event.

  

The top two times, in each event, qualify for the state meet. Each individual may compete in five events.
