Whitmire has good college season

Helps NGCSU to finish 6th

POSTED: April 27, 2010 5:08 p.m.

Charley Whitmire, former Dawson County Lady Tiger golfer, recently completed the Peachbelt Conference Tournament for North Georgia College & State University.

Whitmire finished the two-day event, held at Callaway Garden’s Lakeview Course, with a 14th overall finish out of 170 golfers.

The Lady Saints posted the best score of their inaugural season, with every golfer on the team scoring well above their average and a sixth place finish in the conference.

The Lakeview Course is a very difficult Par 71, 5,860 yards with many water hazards. Whitmire shot a 91 for a 20th spot in the field after the first 18-holes.

The second round was totally different for Whitmire. The former Lady Tiger golfer made 8 pars on the first 10 holes. Whitmire finished with a 79 and a 14th overall finish. The 170 was her best two-day total as a collegiate golfer.

Flagler College, from St. Augustine, Fla., won the event with a 2-day total of 327. Armstrong Atlantic, from Savannah, finished second, just 3-shots behind.

As a team, the Lady Saints finished 254 over par with a 2-day total of 822.

Individually, Montevallo’s Emily Gibson captured the title, firing a 2-over par 74 to take a 2-shot victory over UNC-Pembroke’s Katja Dammann.

Whitmire’s season got off to a slow start, but as the weather warmed up so did the Lady Saint golfer.

In the final week of the regular season Whitmire fired an 88 in a tri-match with Shorter and Motevallo at Achasta Golf Course, North Georgia’s home course, in Dahlonega.

The following day Whitmire posted a 78 in a dual match with Montevallo, also at Achasta. The 78 set the bar for the new Lady Saint program, as the low 18-hole round.

Whitmire’s driving was on fire during her final three rounds of the season. The Lady Saint golfer only missed three fairways during that time.

The Conference Tournament concluded the season for Whitmire and her teammates.
