Candidate qualifying gets under way Monday

POSTED: April 21, 2010 4:00 a.m.

Qualifying begins Monday in Dawson County for candidates running for county commission, school board and clerk of Superior Court.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the field of candidates to replace former Clerk of Court Becky McCord had grown to four.

They included: Carl Volk, businessman; Doug Boyle, a law enforcement officer; Gaye Cantrell, a banker; and local businessman Eric Toal.

McCord resigned earlier this year and is awaiting trial on charges she took thousands of dollars from the office.

There are two seats available on both the school board and county commission.

Lionel Graves and Bill Minor have said they plan to pursue the District 3 commission seat held by Mike Connor, who has not indicated if he will seek a second term.

District 1 Commissioner Gary Pichon announced earlier this month that he would seek re-election, saying there was work he wanted to see finished.

Incumbent school board members Cecil Bennett and Will Wade have each said they plan to run again.

No challengers have emerged in either contest.

The fee to qualify for clerk of court is $1,491.65, while it is $337 for county commissioner and $72 for school board.

Qualifying runs from 9 a.m. Monday through noon April 30 at the Dawson County Board of Elections and Registrations Office on Academy Avenue.

The primary is July 20, as is the special election.
