GSP investigating wreck, victim’s blood level evaluated

POSTED: September 21, 2008 5:04 a.m.

A Dawsonville man was killed early Wednesday morning in a one-vehicle crash at the intersection of Hwy. 53 and Hugh Stowers Rd. in Dawson County.

Patrick “Steven” Combs, 24, was traveling west on Hwy. 53 when officials say he left the roadway and struck an embankment.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the wreck.

Troopers have not said if they believe speed, drugs or alcohol were factors in the wreck, but the victim’s blood has been sent to a lab for a toxicology report, said GSP Senior Communication Officer King.

“Results are pending,” she said. “The report says he carried unknown for alcohol involved.”

A native of Forsyth County, who lived most his life in Dawson County, Combs was a 2003 Dawson County High School graduate and attended Gainesville State College.

He was employed as the assistant manager at Calvin Klein.

Survivors include his son, Patrick Brady Combs of Dawsonville; parents, Celia and Greg Ramey of Dawsonville; brothers, Derick Aiken of Cumming, Josh Aiken, Chris Lower, both of Dahlonega, Gabe Aiken of Dawsonville; grandparents, Pat Bolton, Doug and Deborah Ramey, all of Cumming.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 12, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Greg Foster will officiate.

Interment will follow in Dawsonville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends after noon Thursday at the funeral home.

Combs death is the county’s eighth fatality of 2008.

Two Dawson County teens were killed on Nix Bridge Road in January when the car they were in crossed the centerline and collided with a school bus.

A month later, Christopher Sams and his unborn daughter were killed in a collision near the Dawson-Forsyth County line on Hwy. 53.

The next day, an elderly woman was killed when she careened down an embankment in west Dawson County.

On April 10, a Forsyth County woman was killed when an unlicensed driver in a log truck lost control on Kelly Bridge Road, followed by the death of a Blue Ridge man in May, who lost control of his vehicle on Hwy. 183.

Five people died on Dawson County roads in 2007.
