Commissioner Gary Pichon announced last week he will seek a second term on the Dawson County Board of Commissioners.

First elected in 2006, Pichon, 62, said roads and bridges, water and communication were dire issues he hoped to address as a commissioner.

Pichon, a resident of Dawson County since 1991, said there is still more he would like to see accomplished.

“I’m a trained commissioner now, and I’d say I’m doing a pretty reasonable job,” he said Monday.

An advocate of tourism as an industry for Dawson County, Pichon said he’d like to have a voice in the project that would create “a super-park out of the Dawson Forest Wildlife Management 10,000 acres.”

A graduate of Vanderbilt, Pichon is an army veteran and spent several years in upper management in the corrugated box industry.

Pichon later attended Harvard before becoming the senior vice president of Riverwood International. In that capacity, he was responsible for 17 factories worldwide.

Pichon believes the purpose of government is to let the will of the majority work after everybody has had their say and everyone listens carefully to all sides.

“I’m a good listener, but I don’t just listen to the ones who talk the loudest,” he said. “I’m prepared when I walk into the meetings and I work hard to do a good job.”

Pichon is the first to announce his intention for the District 1 seat.

The district, which covers the upper northwestern half of the county and includes much of the rural land along with the Big Canoe development, is the largest district in the county in terms of area.

The General Primary will be July 20.
