The Tiger varsity soccer team split games last week. On Tuesday, the team dominated Towns County in a 6-2 victory. Friday, Dawson County lost an area game to Union County in Blairsville, 2-0

With the win and the loss, Dawson is currently 7-3 overall and 3-1 in area play.

It was huge night for Mauricio Escobar for the Tigers. Escobar scored five goals in the 6-2 win over Towns. Escobar has a team leading 15 goals on the year.

The five goals broke the school record for goals in one game and he is one goal off the season record.

Alex Cote picked up the other goal for Dawson. Cote also had four assists in the game.

“We did not play our best game. I thought it was the worst passing game we played all season. I just thought, as a whole, we did not move around enough and look for the open man,” Head Coach Jed Lacey said.

On Friday, Union came out on fire in the second half and broke open a scoreless halftime to take the 2-0 win.

The Panthers scored on a free kick just outside the 18-yard mark.

Union scored again five minutes after their first goal from just inside the penalty box. It was all the Panthers needed to win and remain undefeated in area play.

“This was two undefeated teams in region playing for all the marbles. We had our chances to score in the first half and did not finish any of them. That was the game,” said Lacey.

“I was very proud of how my young players gave it their all, especially Alex Cote and Tyler Freeman, who played the whole game with pretty tough injuries,” he added.

Only two teams will advance from each area to the state tournament. The Tigers are currently fighting for a second seed to state. Dawson will control its own destiny with three area games remaining.

The Tigers play Fannin, today, Tuesday, March 30. Scores were not available as of press time. The team also has to play Lakeview Academy and Riverside Military Academy.

If the team wins they are in the state playoffs. If they lose one of these three games they are out.
