Weather has wreaked havoc on the beginning of baseball season for Dawson County High School.

The Tigers have only been able to play three games so far due to all the rain and snow.

“It seems like we start over every time we play,” said Dawson County Varsity Head Coach Jimmy Pruett.

The Tigers are currently 2-1 on the young season with two wins over Pickens County High School and a loss to Chestatee High School last Saturday.

Dawson will have a busy week this week.

They played host to Lambert High School (Monday) and Union County High School (today). Scores were unavailable at press time.

Friday the team will travel to Gainesville for a game with Riverside Military Academy. First pitch will be at 5 p.m.

The Tigers will also travel to Rabun County next Tuesday, March 16 for a 5:30 p.m. first pitch.

Every game, except the one against Lambert, will be a Region 8-AA game.

Dawson County traveled to Jasper last Thursday for a game against the Pickens County Dragons.

Despite a slow start, the Tigers prevailed, winning 7-1.

Chase Gilreath picked up the win on the mound for Dawson County. Gilreath pitched five strong innings and gave up only three hits. Gilreath also had five strikeouts with only two walks in the start.

Pitching the sixth inning was Preston Adams and finishing the game was Chase Williams.

It was a scoreless contest until the fifth inning when the Tigers managed to push five runs across the plate.

The inning started with a single by Cody Marshall, who later came around to score. Also collecting hits in the inning were Dylan Garrett, Gilreath, Chase Williams and Josh Harper.

The Tigers added two more runs in the seventh inning. The highlight of the inning was a 2-run homer by Harper.

On Saturday, the Tigers dropped a 13-5 decision to visiting Chestatee High School.

Dawson jumped out in the first inning to a 1-0 lead.

Leadoff hitter Mitch Starling was hit by a pitch and after two wild pitches scored on a fielder’s choice from Gilreath.

Chestatee blew the game open in the second inning. The team scored eight runs off of Tiger starter Ryan Morawsky.

The Eagles added two more runs in the third inning and three runs in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach.

Pruett’s group tried to rally in the third inning. The Tigers scored four runs. Kaleb Kicklighter hit a long homer that scored two runs to highlight the inning.

The Tigers only had five hits in the contest. Two of those hits came off the bat of second baseman Dylan Garrett.
