Dawson County residents enjoyed a brief break from winter on Feb. 19 and 20, as temperatures flirted with 60 degrees under sunny skies.

After several weeks of freezing, wet conditions — including 4 inches of snow on Feb. 12 — families flocked to Rock Creek Park off Hwy. 9 to enjoy the sun and the warmth.

Taylor Tolbert and Casey Hester visited the park to toss a football. Hester’s 10-month-old, Sailor, enjoyed the weather from the comfort of her stroller.

Tolbert said it just made sense to visit the park Feb. 19.

“When the weather’s nice like this, where else are you going to go?” Tolbert said. “It’s not so warm yet that you can go swimming. It’s park weather.”

Andrew Santander thought going to the park was a good idea too.

He brought son, David, 3, with him. They spent time on the playground, where the child was partial to the swing set.

“The weather’s been so bad the past few weeks,” said Santander, who visits the park as often as he can. “We thought we’d come and enjoy it while it’s nice out.”

The warm-up was short lived as rain and wind returned Monday.

According to the National Weather Service, there’s another chance for rain or snow today, with the daytime high temperature not topping 40 degrees on Thursday.

Friday’s forecast calls for highs in the upper 40s, warming into the lower 50s under partly cloudy skies through the weekend.
