Soldier boy’s back in school

Young man fights disease

POSTED: February 24, 2010 4:00 a.m.

A local young man known to some as “Soldier Boy” is back in school after a positive review from his doctor.

Third grader Kenny Stewart III and mother, Ana Miles, have had some trying times after Stewart was diagnosed with a form of brain cancer in November 2008.

Results from recent doctor visits “have all come back good,” Miles said Feb. 15. “We’re nearly done with chemotherapy. March is the last one.”

Stewart will continue to be evaluated by doctors every three months for the next several years, Miles added.

In the meantime, Stewart’s enjoying his time back at Robinson Elementary School. “He’s grateful to be back around his friends,” she said. “He comes home everyday smiling, even if it was a bad day. He even smiles while he’s doing his homework.”

Stewart started back to school the last week of January, following months of learning from home. A teacher from Robinson Elementary visited him during the week to help him stay caught up with schoolwork.

“We hated saying goodbye to the homebound teaching, but we know Kenneth has a soul that wants to fly,” Miles said. “He really wanted to go back, so we talked with his teachers and his doctors, and we’re going to put it in God’s hands.”

Miles said prayer continues to dominate all aspects of her life. “We’ll continue to live by the power of prayer. We’re praying I’ll find a job soon and that we keep getting good news from the doctors.”
