Eighth graders getting hot

POSTED: February 2, 2010 4:52 p.m.

Riverview Middle School Head Coach Mark Thomason’s eighth grade boys basketball team is getting hot at just the right time.

The Eagles defeated Pickens County Middle School, 48-44, last Thursday in overtime. The victory was the fourth win in a row for the Eagles.

Riverview came from nine points down to come away with the victory. The team is currently 5-6 on the season.

Riverview had to win the game by eight points to secure the second seed in the annual tournament.

Scott Zadernak and Steven Stanfill were dominant forces on offense and defense. Both players secured double-doubles with 14 points and 10 rebounds each in the win.

Last Monday, Jan. 25, the team defeated Jasper Middle School by a 31-26 score in a very close game.

Isaac Rice led all Eagle scorers with 13 points. He also had five rebounds.

Steven Stanfill chipped in with nine points, 10 rebounds, and five blocked shots in the win.

The Eagles played Union County in the first round of the tournament Monday at Pickens County Middle School. Scores were unavailable at press time.

7th graders lose two

The Riverview Middle School seventh grade boys basketball team suffered two losses last week.

Last Monday, the Eagles lost a close battle, 40-32, to Jasper Middle School.

On Thursday, the team lost by a disappointing 42-25 score to Pickens County Middle School.

With the two defeats Riverview fell to 2-9 on the year.

Monday’s game was back and forth the entire contest.

“We played with them through the first three quarters, but just couldn’t get anything going in the fourth quarter,” said Head Coach Mark Thomason.

Brandon Abbott scored 16 points in the loss for Riverview.

Pickens County used a 16-0 first quarter lead and never looked back, to come away with the 17-point win.

Once again Abbott led all Eagles on offense with 10 points. Zach Bachan added eight points.
