The gymnasium at Rock Creek Sports Complex was filled almost to capacity Jan. 22, although there were no youth sporting events scheduled for the evening.

Dawson County Park and Recreation reserved the night to pay tribute to the hundreds of coaches who volunteer their time each year to make a difference in the lives of youth in park and rec sports.

With more than 300 people in attendance, Athletic Director Kristi Creegan thanked all the volunteers for their service to the community and the youth of Dawson County.

Several individuals were recognized throughout the evening, either with awards named in their honor, or as recipients of the awards.

Like many volunteers, who do what they do because they love it and prefer to stay out of the limelight, several award winners said they weren’t worthy of any recognition.

Russell Burt, who received the Sandy Walls Football Award and the Lombardi Coaches Choice Award, was surprised by both.

“Sandy Walls was Mr. Football when we were growing up in Dawson County. To get his award makes it so much more special, because of the kind of man he was,” Burt said. “This award is about Sandy.”

Walls’ three sons Levi, Lance and Logan were on hand to present the award in the memory of their father, a former teacher and coach who died when the boys were young.

“All three of us felt honored to be able to present the award,” said Lance Walls.

“This community has helped raise us. My dad’s death was a very public thing and we’re so honored to be a part of this.”

A man of few words, Burt also teared up a bit when he was announced the winner of the Lombardi Coaches Choice Award.

“To be chosen by your peers is such an honor,” he said.

Josh Watson also received the Sandy Walls Football Award.
