ASK THE EXPERTS

Ladies have tough week

POSTED: January 26, 2010 4:22 p.m.

It was a tough week for the Dawson County Lady Tiger varsity basketball team. Head Coach Steve Sweat’s team played two top-10 ranked AA opponents in Rabun County, No. 3, and North Oconee, No. 10. To make matters worse, both games were long road trips.

Tuesday, the Lady Tigers traveled to Rabun County to face an undefeated Lady Wildcat team.

Rabun showed why the team has won 18-straight games, after coming away with the 77-49 win over Dawson.

The Lady Tigers were never in the contest. A suffocating Rabun full court press caused numerous turnovers by Dawson.

Rabun took a commanding 48-26 halftime lead. The Lady Wildcats never looked back and poured in 29 more points in the second half to Dawson’s 23, for the 28-point win.

Jessi Phillips led all Dawson scorers with 11 points. Morgan Bennett was the only other Lady Tiger in double figures with 10 points. Bennett was perfect from the free throw line, going 4-for-4.

The trip to Bogart was another disappointment for Dawson County on Thursday night.

The Lady Titans came into the contest with a 14-3 overall record. Once again, North Oconee showed why they are one of the elite teams in Region 8-AA , after coming away with a 70-43 win.

Dawson County was never in the game and was outscored every quarter.

“We didn’t make many shots, played poor defense and were out rebounded. It wasn’t a very good game overall for us,” said Sweat.

Judith Hall led all Lady Tigers offensively with 11 points. Also scoring for Dawson County were Jessi Phillips with eight points; Carly Gilreath added six points; Christian Daniel, five points; Nikki Dean with four points; Hannah Porter contributed three points; Morgan Huber, Kenna Seitz and Alyss Woody each contributed two points in the contest.

Dawson has currently dropped three straight games and fell to 10-7 overall and 3-4 in Region 8-AA play.

The Lady Tigers will travel to Commerce this Friday for a game with East Jackson.

As of press time East Jackson had a 2-12 record.

It will be the only game this week for the girls’ team.

Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
