Haiti needs donations

POSTED: January 27, 2010 4:00 a.m.

Helping a victim of the earthquakes in Haiti can be as easy as turning on your computer or writing a check.

Local churches, including First Baptist of Dawsonville and Grace Presbyterian, are gathering funds and clothing to send over to those devastated by high-magnitude tremors in the capital, Port-au-Prince.

Red Cross estimates of casualties have been between 45,000 and 50,000. The agency based its figures on reports from volunteers across the city following the Jan. 12 incident.

Those looking to assist the American Red Cross can visit www.redcross.org and donate a minimum of $10, which goes to help volunteers assist survivors.

Funds also pay for food and supplies for earthquake victims.

First Baptist Church of Dawsonville is collecting supplies, specifically clothing, at the church office, located at 900 Hwy. 9 N. Clothing can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week.

Grace Presbyterian Church is collecting donations from those wishing to help.

Pastor Mark Weaver said checks may be sent to the church at 170 Hwy. 9 N. Checks should be earmarked for Haiti disaster relief.

Weaver said large-scale disasters tend to bring people together to help.

“Human need galvanizes our thinking,” Weaver said. “A lot of folks have good hearts and they see the enormity of the need and they know that many of us have more than enough, so there’s a willingness to share.”

Grace Presbyterian’s phone number is (706) 216-7747. First Baptist Church of Dawsonville’s phone number is (706) 265-2612.
