The Lady Tigers lost a tough battle to Region 8A-AA foe Union County last Wednesday in Dawsonville. Despite keeping the game close for much of three quarters, the Lady Tigers fell to Union 51-41.

It was the first sub-region game of the season for the Lady Tigers. Dawson is currently 10-5 overall and 0-1 in the sub-region. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday night, but due to the weather last week, it was pushed back one day.

Head Coach Steve Sweat and his team were able to build a 23-21 lead at halftime. Union turned up the defensive pressure after halftime and outscored the Lady Tigers 14-7 in the third quarter to take a 37-28 lead.

“We had some chances and just couldn’t hit a shot,” Sweat said. “Union came out after halftime ready to play and we were just flat. You can’t do that against good teams.”

Freshman point guard Carly Gilreath led all Lady Tigers in scoring with 11 points. Gilreath also pulled down five rebounds for Dawson County.

Morgan Huber also had a good game offensively. She hit two, 3-point shots and finished with eight points in the contest.

Also scoring for Dawson were Morgan Bennett and Hannah Porter with six points each.

Allie Costley contributed four points, followed by Jessi Phillips with three points, Judith Hall with two points and Christian Daniel scored a single point.

The Lady Tigers will make-up a game Thursday, when they travel to North Oconee for another region showdown. The Lady Titans are currently sporting an 11-3 record and a #10 ranking in AA.

Next Tuesday, Dawson will play host to Fannin County. The Lady Rebels are also having a fine year with an impressive 14-2 record.

Tip-off for both games will be at 6 p.m.
