JV Lady Tigers defeat Union County

POSTED: January 19, 2010 4:37 p.m.

The Lady Tiger junior varsity basketball team defeated Union County 30-24 last Wednesday in Dawsonville.

With the win, Dawson moved to 5-4 on the season and is currently on a three game winning streak.

It was a slow moving first half for both teams. Union took a 14-10 lead into halftime.

“Worst half we played this year,” said Head Coach Jed Lacey.

Dawson came alive in the fourth quarter and outscored the Lady Panthers 17-5 to come away with the victory.

The Lady Tigers put on a full court press that really bothered Union. The Lady Panthers were forced into numerous turnovers that allowed Dawson to score uncontested lay-ups.

“We came out in the second half after getting our minds right at half [time] and physically dominated the game,” Lacey said.

“The great thing about these girls is that when everyone else thinks we have no way to come back, or play against a more talented team, they just go out there and get it done. They refuse to lose,” he added.

Kacie Bearden had a game-high 14 points for the Lady Tigers. Bearden nailed two, long 3-pointers during the game.

Whitney Glover also contributed offensively with seven points and pulled down six rebounds.

Samie Smith scored four points and grabbed seven rebounds in the win.

The JV Lady Tigers will travel to Bogart on Jan. 21 for a game against North Oconee. Tip-off will be 4:15 p.m.

On Friday, the team will go to North Murray.

The school is in its first-year, and has no juniors or seniors.

“It will be tough game for us. They have three sophomores over six feet tall. We will have our work cut out for us,” Lacey said.

Game time for North Murray will be 7 p.m.
