It was a long tiring week for the Dawson County Lady Tiger varsity basketball team. The Lady Tigers made two long road trips. The team travelled to Walnut Grove on Tuesday night, a 52-31 defeat, and to East Jackson on Friday night, a 39-38 win.

With the win and loss, Dawson currently stands at an impressive 8-4 overall. The team is 2-1 in Region 8-AA play.

“It was a long and late bus ride,” Head Coach Steve Sweat said about

Tuesday’s trip to Walnut Grove. Dawson’s play seemed, especially in the second half, that they were weary from the ride.

Despite the travel, Dawson jumped out to an 8-2 lead. The Lady Warriors (4-4; 1-2) then went on a run and led at halftime 26-19.

Turnovers and missed shots were a key to the defeat in the second half. The Lady Tigers just could not get anything going offensively after halftime and lost by 21-points, 52-31, after managing only 12 total points in the second half.

“Our scoring was way down due to untimely turnovers and we just couldn’t make a shot,” said Sweat.

Jessi Phillips was the only Lady Tiger to score in double digits with 10 points. Hannah Porter contributed five points, followed by Allie Costley with four and Alyss Woody with three points.

There were a host of Lady Tigers with two points: Morgan Bennett, Natalie Parker, Judith Hall and Carly Gilreath. Nikki Dean scored one point.

On Friday, the team boarded the bus again for an hour and a half trip to Commerce to face East Jackson.

The game was exciting with the Lady Tigers coming away with a 39-38 win.

East Jackson missed a lay-up at the buzzer to give the Lady Tigers the win. East Jackson fell to 1-6 on the season.

Morgan Bennett was on fire for Dawson. Bennett connected on three, 3-pointers to lead all scorers with 13 points.

Carly Gilreath also had a big game offensively with 10 points and she pulled down four rebounds.

“It was low scoring and very exciting game,” said Sweat.

Also scoring for Dawson was: Christian Daniel and Judith Hall with five points; Jessi Phillips, Kenna Seitz and Allie Costley each contributed two points.

The team is now off until Jan. 6,  when they host Lambert High School.
