The true meaning of Christmas

POSTED: December 23, 2009 4:00 a.m.

All year long I write articles about everything from shrubs to you name it. Since it’s almost Christmas, please permit me to set aside my “normal” topics and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas.

I remember Christmas as a child. The calendar must have been different in those days because I felt as if there were at least three months between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

As an adult, I find myself with deadlines and commitments. Christmas comes and goes quickly. It’s not the calendar that has changed, but me.

During this Christmas season take time for others and especially those who are in need. The true joy of Christmas is not receiving; it’s in giving. It would be wonderful if our desire for giving would continue throughout the year. The gift of kindness and goodwill toward others would be an excellent start.

Years have passed and some may say I want to relive my own childhood through my children. What I am really trying to do, by way of traditions, is to teach my children the true meaning of Christmas.

Christmas should be a time for peace. Not only during Christmas but all year, let’s set aside differences and work together to make our world a better place.

Peace on earth and goodwill toward others should begin in our own homes. By setting high standards and values for ourselves, our children will have good moral examples to follow. Why can’t every day be like Christmas? It could if we have the true meaning of Christmas in our hearts.

Christmas is a time of being with those we love, as God inspired with his coming to be with us. With my family and friends, I know I am blessed.
