Biden's visit will close roads temporarily

POSTED: December 17, 2009 8:38 a.m.

Getting Vice President Joe Biden from the nation’s capital to Dawsonville requires a lot of planning, but local officials are hoping to keep roadway inconveniences to a minimum.

Biden is expected to land this morning at Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta before proceeding by motorcade to Impulse Manufacturing in Dawsonville for a late morning event.

Biden is expected to speak at the facility around 11:30 a.m. The event is expected to last about an hour, when the motorcade then departs.

"There won’t be any (long-term) road closures," Dawson County Sheriff Billy Carlisle said. "Some roads will be closed for a short period only when (Biden’s motorcade) is passing through."

The motorcade is expected to proceed along Ga. 400 North to Industrial Boulevard, to Lumpkin Campground Road, to G.W. Taffer Road.

The route will take the vice president’s entourage past the North Georgia Premium Outlets center along Ga. 400.

Temporary "rolling" ramp and intersection closures also may impact traffic along Ga. 400 in Forsyth County and roads in Cobb County.

Although local law enforcement agencies will assist with securing the vice president’s travel route, Biden’s motorcade is expected to include members of the U.S. Secret Service. Among other things, the Secret Service is charged with protecting national and foreign leaders.

While local agencies’ powers are limited to a given area of jurisdiction, Secret Service agents have the authority to carry firearms and make arrests for offenses against the country committed in their presence.
