The Lady Tigers keep finding a way to win. Last week was a perfect example, as Head Coach Steve Sweat and the team won two close games over Banks County 42-39, and Jefferson, 37-35. The team’s only hiccup was a 50-42 loss to White County on Saturday.

The two wins were Region 8-AA victories. Dawson currently has a region record of 2-0 and 7-3 overall. The loss to White County (7-AAA) was a non-region game.

The team now has three more victories than it did last season when it finished 4-22.

Tuesday saw the Lady Tigers play a tough Banks County Lady Leopards team. Jessi Phillips had a big night offensively for Dawson. Phillips wound up with 18 points and three rebounds to lead the Lady Tigers.

“Jessi had a great shooting night,” said Sweat.

Dawson got off to a quick start against the Lady Leopards. The Lady Tigers opened up a 14-5 lead in the first quarter. By halftime, Dawson kept up the offensive pace and led 20-12.

The second half saw Banks (2-5) mount a comeback. The Lady Leopards, under Coach Jerry King, outscored Dawson 27-22. It wasn’t enough as the Lady Tigers came away with the hard fought win.

Freshman point guard Carly Gilreath also scored in double figures for Dawson with 11 points. Also scoring for Dawson were Morgan Huber with five points, Kenna Seitz had four points and six rebounds, Allie Costley contributed three points, and Hannah Porter added one point.

The Lady Tigers pulled out another nail-biter against Jefferson (0-8) on Friday at the Ford E. Phillips Gymnasium.

Morgan Bennett hit her only shot, a 3-pointer, late in the fourth quarter to put the Lady Tigers up by a point, 34-33.

Dawson’s defense then held on an attempted last shot by the Lady Dragons as the buzzer sounded giving the Lady Tigers another region victory.

The Lady Dragons led most of the first half, and went into halftime with a slim 26-22 advantage. Dawson stormed out of the dressing room in the second half to tie the game at 27-27. It was back and forth until Bennett hit her 3-pointer.

“That was a big shot by Morgan,” said Sweat.

Judith Hall led all Dawson scorers with nine points. Hall was followed by Costley-eight points, Gilreath-six, Seitz-four, Phillips and Bennett-three each, and Porter and Christian Daniel with two points each.

The Lady Tigers traveled to Cleveland on Saturday to face White County (2-5).

Dawson got off to a slow start and trailed 10-2 after one quarter of play.

The Lady Warriors continued to attack and outscored Dawson 13-10 in the second period to take a 23-12 lead at halftime.

Both teams had big third quarters offensively, and scored 18 points each.

White County held on to its lead, 41-30, after three quarters of play.

Despite outscoring White County 12-9 in the final quarter, the Lady Tigers lost 50-42.

Freshman post player Allie Costley led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 12 points. Natalie Parker and Phillips scored eight points each, Gilreath contributed four points, and Huber and Porter each had two points.

The team’s last game before Christmas break will be Friday against East Jackson.

Game time will be at 7 p.m.
