Retired educators present scholarship, awards

Dawson County Retired Educators Association presented its first scholarship award to Dolly Henson, paraprofessional in the special education department of Dawson County High School.

 

Henson received the $500 check at the group’s annual picnic at Rock Creek Park recently. She plans to use the money to complete requirements for a bachelor’s degree.

 

At the same time, the association recognized several of its own members with certificates of appreciation. Doris Fausett, longtime secretary/treasurer of the group, received the community service award.

 

Elizabeth Nix, last year’s recipient, presented Fausett with the award.

Rachel Padgett was recognized for volunteering at the Dawson County Senior Center for 14 years. Betty Styles had received the volunteer award for the previous year.

 

President Rebekah Oliver announced the winners in the fifth grade elementary students’ Grandparents Essay Contest. First place winners received $25 each, second place received $15 each and honorable mention received $5 each. The awards had previously been presented at each individual’s school.

 

Black’s Mill Elementary School recipients were Christina Sanchez (first place), Carly Glaze (second place) and Susy Grizzle and Maria Torres were both honorable mentions.

 

Kilough Elementary School recipients were Megan Murphy (first place), Meghan Picklesimer (second place) Brooke Lewis and Celeste Chism were both named honorable mentions at the school.

 

Robinson Elementary School recipients were Devin Hickman (first place), Taylor Bennett (second place) and Katie Hall and Trevor Gordon were each named honorable mentions.
