Tigers prepare for Sonoraville

Dawson County High School football coach Jeff Lee and the Dawson County Tigers will travel to Sonoraville High School tomorrow night to face the Phoenix in Gordon County.

 

The scrimmage will give the coaches a chance to evaluate players against another opponent in full pads.

 

Sonoraville is coming off a 1-9 season last year.

 

The win marked the first for the school in its 2-year history.

 

Phoenix Coach Chuck King is optimistic about his team this season.

 

The Phoenix are in only their second year of varsity competition, but they finally picked up their first win over LaFayette 26-15 in their second-to-last game of the season last year.

 

Despite the team’s record, it will be a tough game for the Tigers.

 

Sonoraville showed last season that they can hang with many of their opponents.

 

In four games last season, Sonoraville had a lead in the final quarter, only to let it slip away at the end.

 

King said about last year’s team, “We were competitive in most of our contests.

 

“I’m sure some people have grown tired of talking about our first win, but not in the Sonoraville community. I am glad the first one has come and gone, and I am interested in making winning a habit.”

 

The Phoenix will be led by 15 seniors this season, which will include quarterback Y.J Glover, speedy running back Robert McAfee, tight end Taylor Sims, wide receivers Ethan McCarley, Trent Payne and Nathan Brooks and guard Steven Chandler, who is the strongest player on the team.

 

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
