Riverview Middle School softball coach Jeff Compton sounded relieved after his Riverview Lady Eagles escaped a close call, pulling off a 9-8 win over Clear Creek last Friday in Gilmer County.

The game was the opening game of the season for the Lady Eagles.

“We did good,” said Compton. “It’s great to get the first game jitters out of the way.”

Riverview had to overcome several errors to capture the win.

Left fielder Brittany Shirley made a game-saving catch to help preserve the win.

“Man, was that a great play,” said Compton. “If she doesn’t make that play they would have gone ahead.”

Taylor Shirley led Riverview in hitting as she connected on an inside-the-park home run.

Compton said, “That hit by Taylor really ignited us. It got us going offensively.”

Riverview pitcher Sara Mulder pitched a great game, according to Compton.

“We made some errors behind her. Sara pitched a great game,” he said.

“It’s good to get the first win. We are glad it’s behind us and sets the tone for the rest of the season. It also builds confidence in our girls,” Compton said.

Riverview will be back in action this Friday as they play cross-county rival Dawson County Middle School on the high school field.

First pitch will be at 4:30 p.m.
