Lady Tigers get first win in history

POSTED: August 31, 2008 5:03 a.m.

It didn’t take long for the Dawson County Middle School softball team to leave its mark on the opposition.

On Friday, the Lady Tigers only needed three innings to defeat visiting Jasper 15-0. The win was the first ever for the softball squad since the new school opened its doors last week.

The game was called after three innings due to the mercy-rule.

“I was really nervous going into the game,” Dawson County coach Karen Spencer said. “We didn’t have a good practice on Thursday and I was really not sure what was going to happen.”

Pitcher Jenna Abbott threw a great game for the Lady Tigers. Abbott recorded six strikeouts to go along with a shutout to pick up her first win.

The offense was dominant. The team batted around in the second inning.

Abbott and Megan Matthews both picked up triples in the offensive onslaught.

“Everybody got on base and it was pretty impressive,” said Spencer about her team’s potent offensive attack.

“I’m glad to get our first game under our belt. We played together as a team. It was really impressive,” said Spencer.

Dawson will host Riverview on Friday in what should be an exciting and competitive game for both teams.

“Coach Compton, Riverview’s head coach, was joking around the other day. He told me to mix up my players and put them in different positions. He was just kidding. It should be a very good game and will be fun for the kids,” Spencer said.

The opening pitch will be at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Dawson County High School field.
