There was no red carpet or flashing camera bulbs at Robinson Elementary last week.

But well-known locals were in the building, and they stopped by to read to students during the school’s celebrity reading day Nov. 18.

Media Specialist Joyce Millwood said 42 people volunteered to read to students, including 93-year-old Herbert Robinson, who the school is named for, the Rev. Tim Biddy of Silver City Baptist Church, former superintendent Nicky Gilleland and children’s book author Drake Highlander of Atlanta.

Highlander read passages from his book, “What Not to Do When You Find a Spaceship” to Tara Tsikerdanos’ fourth-grade class.

“The children love it when adults read to them,” Millwood said. “I had readers who told me that our students are the best behaved they have seen anywhere.

“That makes us really, really proud,” she added.

The primary purpose of celebrity reading day, Millwood said, is “to show students that reading is a lifelong process. You never get too old. You never get tired of reading.”

Celebrity reading day is held at all three elementary schools in Dawson County.
