With the 2009-2010 basketball season ready to get underway, the Dawson County Tigers held a scrimmage game last Thursday night against Providence Christian Academy from Lilburn.

The Class A Stars are coming off a 15-11 season last year.

Dawson came out on top after Tiger Kaleb Holbrook connected on a three-point basket, off a pass from Jacob Evans, with only 5 seconds remaining in regulation to secure the 41-38 win.

The Stars tried a desperation shot at the buzzer that came up short.

It was a low scoring game for both teams. Dawson held a 13-11 lead after one quarter, but fell behind to Providence at halftime by a 23-19 margin.

The Tigers outscored Providence 22-15 over the last two quarters to come away with the win. The Stars managed only four points the entire third quarter.

Head Coach Thad Burgess saw two key players, Evans and Stephen Scaife, get in foul trouble early. Scaife did not play at all in the third quarter, while Evans played only a few minutes in the second half.

“It was really good to get some quality minutes from several players,” said Burgess. “We had some jitters as to be suspected. We will have to play much better to beat Oglethorpe County.”

Despite playing limited minutes, Evans still led the Tigers in scoring with eight points. Stephen Johnson scored seven points. followed by Logan Lewis and Holbrook with six points, Stephen Scaife with five, Levi Wilson with four, Tyler Dominy scored three points and Josh Scaife added two points in the scrimmage.

The Tigers open their regular season today at the Ford E. Phillips Center against Oglethorpe County. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Burgess and his team will be at home this Friday night against Cross Keys. The Indians were only 1-23 last season. Tip-off will be around 8:30 p.m.

The Tigers will then participate in the Inaugural Lions Classic at Hebron Christian Academy in Dacula.

Along with Hebron and Dawson County, Tech High School and Mt. Pisgah will also participate in the tournament.
