After years of researching, absorbing and sharing the history and heritage of her homeland, Dahlonega’s Anne Dismukes Amerson has at last published her first novel. 

She will talk about it at the local Historical and Genealogical Society meeting Tuesday, Aug. 26. The public is invited.

Entitled, “Dahlonega’s Gold,” the novel tells the story of fictional character Keziah Cochran against the historical background of this north Georgia area from 1830 to 1900. 

The story begins on New Year’s Eve, 1899, and in flashback plays through the early years of the gold rush, removal of the Cherokee Indians, the Civil War and on to the establishing of the North Georgia Agricultural College.

The book, published by the newly founded University Press of North Georgia, came out just in time for a scheduled book signing at the historic Gold Museum on July 26.

Amerson is the author of nine other books and numerous articles, most of them concerning the history and people of Dahlonega and Lumpkin County. 

Some of her writings have also included Dawson countians, such as the Russell brothers of gold-mining fame.  She is a frequent contributor to magazines like “Georgia Backroads.”

Anne’s husband, State Representative Amos Amerson, is also well known to Dawson County, having just won re-election in the primary for the local district.

All interested people are invited to meet Anne, examine some of her books, especially the newest one, and even have an opportunity to purchase an autographed copy. 

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m., Aug. 26, in the Roy Coleman Meeting Room of the Dawson County Library.
