Campaign focuses on teen driving

Magnetic bumper stickers promote safety

POSTED: October 28, 2009 4:00 a.m.

A group of Dawson County teens hopes a bumper sticker initiative will encourage young motorists to drive safely.

Dawson County Wrestling, a division of USA Charter, has magnetic bumper stickers that read “Back off! Teen driver” for sale to notify other drivers that a teen driver is behind the wheel.

While young drivers represent only 6.5 percent of the nation’s licensed, the National Safety Council reports teen drivers are involved in about 12.2 percent of fatal crashes.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for those between the ages of 15-20, with speed being the most common factor, according to the report.

In Dawson County alone, six teens have been killed in car wrecks in the last two years.

The Dawson County Wrestling team believes the magnetic bumper sticker campaign, which is the group’s fall fundraiser, will save lives.

“We have some great sponsors and will be able to give some for free to the schools and police programs,” said organizer Jennifer Evans. “Our goal has been to see this magnet on every teen's car for maximum public awareness.”

To order the magnets, call (770) 403-9745 or visit saveteendrivers.com for more information.
