Moonshine run kicks festival into gear

New event for 2009

The 42nd Annual Dawsonville Mountain Moonshine Festival kicks off with a “Thunder Road Moonshine Run,” a caravan consisting of about 52 moonshine-era vintage cars dating from the 1930s to the 1960s.

  

On Friday, the caravan will travel from Dawsonville to Hillside Orchard Farms in Wiley, arriving at their destination around 10:30 a.m.

  

Jim Mitchum, who co-starred with his dad, actor Robert Mitchum, in the movie Thunder Road, will be in attendance.

  

Jim Mitchum will also serve as the Grand Marsahl of the 42nd Annual Dawsonville Mountain Moonshine Festival to take place in downtown Dawsonville Oct. 24 and 25.

  

Upon arrival at Hillside Orchard Farms, the Moonshine Run participants will be treated to several moonshine related activities, including viewing a replica moonshine still constructed in a natural setting.

  

There will also be a lectures on the history of moonshining as it once existed in the Southern Appalachian area of the United States.

  

Additional activities at Hillside Orchard Farms will include gem mining, a corn maze and other fall farm day events.

  

A barbecue lunch will be served at $8 per plate.
