From women’s clubs to civic organizations, health iniatives to beautification projects and humanitarian efforts, volunteer opportunities abound in Dawson County.

But with so much available, who knows where to start, who to contact or when to show up to help?

A volunteer handbook, created by volunteer Carol Shoemaker of Dawsonville can answer all those questions.

Shoemaker spent the last several months reviewing a list of volunteer opportunities she compiled several years ago to update the file and make it more readily available to the public.

“Most of the organizations, she made one on one, face to face contact with to update the handbook,” said Linda Williams, president of the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce.

The new version, which is available online, has been updated with telephone contact information from dozens of local agencies, as well as volunteer opportunities available within the organizations.

Civic organization meeting dates and times are also included.

“Dawson County is proud to present this valuable information on our Web site,” said Cathy Brooks, community affairs representative for Dawson County. “We thank Ms. Shoemaker for compiling this comprehensive guide.”

Shoemake said it was a pleasure to work on the handbook.

“The product is a result of the cooperation of many participants who contributed to the success of this project,” she said.
