The Riverview Middle School football team ended its season with a disappointing 30-6 lose to an undefeated Fannin County team last Thursday.
Fannin moves on to play in the Mountain League Championship game.
Riverview finished with an impressive 4-2 record.
“Going into the Fannin game, our game plan was to stop their running game,” Head Coach Mark Thomason said. “We held them to less than 60 yards rushing, but the bad news is that their quarterback threw for over 250 yards and three touchdowns.”
Fannin scored three times before the halftime buzzer sounded.
Two passes, one from 21-yards out and the other on a long pass of 76-yards, and a rushing touchdown from three-yards gave the Rebels a 22-0 lead at the half.
The Rebels added another touchdown in the third quarter on another pass from 26-yards.
The two-point conversion was good and Fannin held a commanding 30-0 lead.
Riverview finally got on the scoreboard with three minutes remaining in the game.
Eagle quarterback Zac Buchanan scored on a sneak from one-yard out. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful. It was only the second time all season that anyone had scored on the Rebels.
The Eagles tried an onside kick that was recovered by the Rebels. Fannin ran out the clock to end the contest.
“Overall I thought we played well against the run. Scott Zadernak and Jacob Lord played well at linebacker and had over double digits in tackles.
Offensively, we were able to move the ball several times on them thanks to running by Scott Zadernak and Gabe Cooper, but we got inside the red zone and stalled,” Thomason said.
“It was a good season. We won the big rivalry game in the county and finished the season with a winning record. We were one play away from the championship game. Losing to Jasper and Clear Creek was tough because we were one play away from winning both of those games.
“We had several kids step up for us this season and there is no doubt that these kids will help Coach Lee at the next level. I want to thank all of my coaches because they put in a lot of hard work to make this season a success,” he added.
