Citizens Academy enters second year

Course gives look at local government

POSTED: September 16, 2009 4:00 a.m.

Do you want to know how your government works? Residents are invited to go behind the scenes of government departments at Dawson County Citizens Academy.

Beginning Sept. 22, residents of Dawson County are invited to participate in the free 10-week course designed to provide an in-depth look at the diverse activities of Dawson County government.

“Citizens will meet their government in person in this unique series as they gain a better understanding of how government works, who to call with questions, and how each citizen can become involved,” said Dawson County Manager Kevin Tanner.

The program, now entering its second year, offers sessions on special projects, emergency services, finance, planning and zoning, law enforcement, court systems and many other vital community services.

“Our first year was tremendously successful and we received excellent feedback from course completers,” said Government and Community Affairs Representative Cathy Brooks.

John Perodeau, a graduate of the inaugural class, said the academy takes the mystery out of local government.

“I am much more informed. The academy more than met its objectives,” Perodeau said. “Too often government is a mystery to the citizen - our only contact is when we’re paying taxes, or dealing with law enforcement. “

Academy classes will meet from 6 - 9 p.m. Tuesday evenings for 10 weeks.

Classes will be held in several community locations including Dawsonville Municipal Complex, Emergency Services Station 7, Dawson County Law Enforcement Center, Rock Creek Park and the Dawson County Courthouse.

Family and friends are invited to attend a graduation ceremony for all program graduates on the last evening.

Registration is required and space is limited to the first 40 applicants.
