ASK THE EXPERTS

Sign up for library card

POSTED: September 16, 2009 4:00 a.m.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and Chestatee Regional Library System wants to make sure that all children in Lumpkin and Dawson counties have the smartest card of all - a library card.

Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.

This month also marks the kick-off of the Fall Story Time Session during Library Card Sign-up Month in addition to holding a drawing for a bag of gently used books for adults, children and teens who register for a library card during the month.

“A library card has always been the most important school supply of all,” said Claudia Gibson, director of the Chestatee Regional Library System. “Kids can come to the library to get homework help and check out books, but they can also play games, check out music, games and DVDs and use the Internet to help make after school life fun.

“There’s a lot happening at Dawson and Lumpkin County libraries.

“The best part for both kids and parents is that it’s all free with a library card.”

Getting a library card is easy. Simply stop by your library with proper identification, such as a valid driver’s license or photo ID with correct address or a photo ID without correct address plus another form of ID with a current address.

There is no minimum age for a child to receive a PINES card.

The parent or legal guardian must sign the application for a child under 18.

Signing a PINES card application denotes acceptance of responsibility for lost or damaged materials.

For more information on how to sign up for a library card, visit the Dawson County Library at 342 Allen Street, (706) 344-3690; Lumpkin County Library at 342 Courthouse Hill, (706) 864-3668; or visit the library online at www.chestateelibrary.org.
