After an almost two-week hiatus, the Dawson County Lady Tiger softball team defeated Region 8-AA foe East Jackson 7-5 last Thursday at Jack Waldrip Field.

East Jackson is currently 3-4 overall for the season, while the Lady Tigers move to 5-3.

“It felt like starting the season all over again,” said Head Coach Jimmy Pruett. “We played seven games pretty quickly then we had that long layoff. I thought our kids handled it well.”

The Lady Tigers hadn’t played a game since Aug. 19 when they lost to Pickens County High School, 3-2.

The victory also broke a three game losing streak.

Dawson hit the ball well throughout the entire game.

Sophomore catcher Kimberly Wallace led the way with three hits. Cheyenne Bennett and freshman Jenna Abbott each contributed two hits.

The Lady Tigers jumped on East Jackson early, taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Abbott had a key hit driving in two of the runs.

The Lady Eagles fought back in the third inning to tie the game at 3-3.

Dawson answered in the bottom of the third by scoring four runs to make the score 7-3.

The 7-3 score was good until the top of the seventh inning.

Errors allowed East Jackson to push two runs across the plate. Sydney Crumbley made an outstanding catch in center field to save at least two more runs.

Dawson escaped with the 7-5 win.

Bennett pitched six and a third innings for Pruett’s team to get the win.

Abbott struck out the last two batters to pick up a save.

“Our defense really let us down with so many errors. We have to get better defensively,” said Pruett.

The Lady Tigers will travel to #2-ranked AA North Oconee Thursday.

The team will return home on Tuesday, Sept. 15 to face Oglethorpe County.

First pitch for both games is scheduled for 5:55 p.m.
