Dawson County Middle School football picked up its first win of the season with a 20-0 shutout of Gilmer County last Thursday.

It was a big win for the young team after a disappointing 14-12 loss to archrival Riverview last Saturday.

The Tigers are currently 1-1 on the season.

It was also the first win for new head coach Thomy Edwards in his young career.

Dawson got on the board first with a five-yard touchdown run by Keaton Toal.

The extra point was good and Dawson held a 7-0 lead.

Quarterback Jackson Putnam hooked up with Toal for a 31-yard touchdown pass to tally a second touchdown for the Tigers. The extra point was no good. Dawson’s lead was extended to 13-0.

The Tigers added one more score before halftime, when Putnam found Toal again on a 9-yard touchdown strike. Dawson held a commanding 20-0 lead at halftime.

Neither team could find the end zone in the second half as both defenses shut down their opponent.

“I was really pleased with the way the defense played,” said Edwards. “The entire unit played really good. There was not one person that stood out.

Offensively, we moved the ball well. The passing game was affective and the running game was great. I thought Zack Guy made a great block on the first touchdown pass.”

Dawson will travel to Fannin County Thursday with a kick-off time of 5 p.m., as the team seeks its second win of the season.
