A LOOK AHEAD

Dawson County vs. Banks County

POSTED: September 9, 2009 4:00 a.m.

Last year, Banks County High School Head Coach Blair Armstrong’s team made the first round of the state playoffs with a 6-5 record.

It was the team’s first winning season and postseason appearance since 1997.

This season the team is off to an 0-2 start with losses to Washington-Wilkes, 34-21, and Riverside Military, 23-12, just like last year.

Gone is running back Justin Beasley who rushed for 2,161 yards. It was the third highest total of any running back in the state.

Armstrong’s offense will run a version of the Wing-T. Armstrong will replace Beasley with junior running back Dylan Lackey. Lackey has been reported to run the 40-yard dash in an amazing time of 4.47. Joining Lackey in the backfield will be junior Clay Frink.

The Leopards will also have a new quarterback in Kane Duncan. Duncan was the leading wide receiver on the team last season. Duncan is a 6’3” 170-pound senior.

Defensively, Banks returned five starters. Matthew Patton will be a player to watch at linebacker. Patton, at 6”1’ and 220 pounds is a third-year starter.

Some think he may be a Division-I player.

In front of Patton will be defensive linemen, led by Brian Mathis at defensive tackle, Darrell Childress and Eli Autry at defensive end.

A weakness for the Leopards may be in their secondary.

The Leopards will run a 4-4 defense.

Dawson County High School Head Coach Jeff Lee and his team must rebound from last week’s game against Jefferson.

In order for the Tigers to be successful the team must keep the ball away from the Leopard offense.

If Eian Perry can play, Dawson will win. Perry missed last week’s game due to a shoulder injury.

Prediction:

Dawson 21

Banks 20
