Motorists traveling through Dawson County played a part in Dawson County Emergency Services last month collecting more than $6,600 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Emergency Services personnel took the streets Aug. 27-29 during the department’s annual fundraising effort for MDA, accepting donations at street corners and storefronts throughout the county.

“Considering the weather and these tough economic times, I am very pleased with the outcome of the drive,” said Lanier Swafford, chief of emergency services. “This proves to me that the hearts of people in Dawson County still bleed green when it comes to charity.”

The MDA boot drive is one of two major fundraisers in which Dawson County Emergency Services participates each year, with a boots for burns drive each spring. Swafford said the event is one of two charities supported by fire fighters across the state.

“One hundred percent of the money raised goes to MDA and the money stays in the state,” Swafford said. “A number of Dawson County families receive assistance from MDA,” he continued.

“Our appreciation goes out to the citizens and to the men and women of emergency services who work together to make this accomplishment a reality,” added Swafford.
