ASK THE EXPERTS

Food distribution is set for Saturday

POSTED: September 9, 2009 4:00 a.m.

The Georgia Mountain Food Bank will hold a USDA Mass Food Distribution from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday in the parking lot of Hollis Transport in Flowery Branch.

The food is provided by the Atlanta Community Food Bank and the U.S. Department of Agriculture through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

People who qualify for the Emergency Food Assistance Program are eligible to receive food. Some 500 families are expected.

Kay Blackstock, executive director of the Georgia Mountain Food Bank, said in a statement that the “increase in demand for food during this economic downturn has touched all walks of life.”

“This additional food source offers a tremendous benefit to those food insecure families in our community as we strive desperately to keep up with the demand for food to serve those going hungry,” Blackstock said.

Each household receiving food will be asked to provide name and address and sign the USDA-required self-declaration form.

To help with the process, volunteers and food bank employees will be on site to help complete the paperwork and direct traffic to load each vehicle.

September is Hunger Action Month. Another food distribution is planned for October.

The food bank, an affiliate of the Atlanta Community Food Bank, collects surplus food and grocery products for distribution to nonprofit partner agencies serving the hungry in the region.

Located in Gaines-ville, it collaborates with the Atlanta organization to provide food to nonprofits with hunger relief programs in Forsyth, Dawson, Hall, Lumpkin and Union counties.

Hollis Transport is at 4515 Cantrell Road in Flowery Branch.
