“It’s ironic that I had to take out a loan to win money,” said Kilough Elementary School teacher Catherine Holcombe, who recently won the Georgia Federal Credit Union’s 50th anniversary grand prize drawing for a $5,000 mortgage payment.

“All GFCU members that applied for a mortgage loan between March 1 and June 30 were entered into a drawing for a chance to win,” said Georgia Federal Credit Union Public Relations Coordinator Tierra Daniels.

“This was one of the biggest contests we’ve ever held,” Daniels added of the drawing, which was part of the credit union’s 50th anniversary celebration.

Holcombe, a wife and mother of two, has taught in the Dawson County School system for 20 years.

She was elated when she received news of winning the drawing.

“I feel very excited that I was chosen and I thank Georgia Federal Credit Union,” Holcombe said of the $5,000 that will go directly towards paying off her mortgage loan’s principle.

Holcombe, who teaches reading and math, said her coworkers describe her as lucky when it comes to winning contest drawings.

“I won a gift card last week at the back to school breakfast and people always joke that I always seem to win things, but this is the biggest thing I’ve ever won,” said Holcombe.

Georgia Federal Credit Union is ranked as one of the top credit unions in Georgia, exceeding $475 million in assets with 14 branch locations and serves employees and family members of over 430 select companies and school systems, including the Dawson County School System.
