ASK THE EXPERTS

Local Special Olympics needs more volunteers

POSTED: August 26, 2009 4:00 a.m.

The Dawson County Special Olympics is clearing hurdles with a new management team that is aiming to regenerate and improve the organization, one that is deemed necessary to the community, and is currently seeking volunteers.

“Dawson County Special Olympics has a wonderful history of providing the opportunity for our athletes to participate in and achieve their highest potential in basketball, bocce, bowling, swimming, softball, track and field, volleyball and the joy of team interaction,” said organizing member Russ DeLoach.

DeLoach said that today, Dawson County Special Olympics fields only teams in bowling and bocce, “not because of lack of interest or need, but because of lack of funds, volunteers and transportation.”

With a new management team in place, DeLoach added that with help from the community, the new team believes that Dawson County Special Olympics can revitalize the necessary organization and provide the athletes with opportunities that once were the hallmark of Dawson County.

“This is a great program that benefits those who participate,” DeLoach said. “We are working to bring the volunteer levels and sports offered back up to what it was a few years ago.”

Dawson County Special Olympics is an affiliate of Special Olympics Georgia, which provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

According to its Web site, www.specialolympicsga.org, the organization invests in people with intellectual disabilities, helping them to develop athletic skills, while also promoting the abilities of the athletes off the field.

The Special Olympics Dawson County management team is preparing for the games that will be held Sept. 18 at Rock Creek Park.
