ASK THE EXPERTS

Property tax seminar planned Saturday

Event sponsored by homeowner’s association

POSTED: August 19, 2009 4:00 a.m.

An educational seminar on understanding property taxes is planned for Saturday morning at the Appalachian Community Bank Conference Center in downtown Dawsonville.

The program is aimed to help county residents learn or confirm what they should know about property taxes but were afraid to ask, said Jane Graves, president of the Dawson County Homeowner’s Association, event sponsor.

“We are excited to be able to present this very current topic of property tax with our members and guests as we all feel the pinch in our pocketbooks. This event is designed as an educational opportunity for residents, as well as a time to check and question our understanding of how this sector of the budget plays a part in the wider issues facing our county, both now and in the future,” Graves said.

Local attorney Clint Bearden will address issues ranging from how property taxes are assessed, to their support of local county budgetary initiatives, and what property owners can do if they believe their assessment is not accurate.

Bearden’s presentation will be followed by a question and answer session.

Representatives from the Dawson County tax assessors, tax commissioners and school board, as well as the Dawson County Board of Commissioners, have been invited to the event.

Light refreshments will be served at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, followed by Bearden’s presentation at 10 a.m.

The seminar is free and open to the public.
