4 stores hit in 3 counties

Weekend thefts may be related

POSTED: August 24, 2008 5:03 a.m.

Authorities in three counties continued searching Wednesday for a suspect in several convenience store burglaries and car thefts.

Lt. Tony Wooten, with the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office said at least two Dawson County convenience stores were targeted Sunday night.

Two stores in Forsyth County and one in Cherokee County were also hit around the same time, Wooten said.

The suspect, authorities say, also stole at least three cars, two from Dawson County and one from Cherokee County.

Two of the stolen vehicles were recovered Monday in Dawson County near Kelly Bridge Road.

The car stolen from Cherokee County was recovered on Hammond Hester Road.

It had been burned, presumably, to destroy evidence, Wooten said.

The suspect allegedly smashed through a front window at the Citgo on Hwy. 9 South at the Dawson/Forsyth county line, around midnight Sunday and escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash, cigarettes and beer.

No one was in the store at the time.

Around 11 p.m. Sunday the owner of Handy Corner, at the intersection of Hwy. 53 and Cowart Road, notified authorities after seeing a masked individual approach the store.

“We believe it is possible the individual realized the owner was still at the store and fled the parking lot in the car stolen out of Cherokee County,” Wooten said.

Authorities are reviewing video surveillance from the stores and other evidence taken from the scenes.
