Optimist Club brings ‘out the best in kids’

POSTED: August 5, 2009 4:00 a.m.

Optimists Clubs are known throughout the world for “Bringing Out the Best in Kids.”

The new Dawsonville chapter plans to continue that tradition.

“We are excited about helping the children of Dawson County,” said Jim Bailey, who has organized the local expansion effort.

Volunteer members of Optimist International spent the last several weeks meeting with those interested in bringing an Optimist Club to the county.

“We are looking for some other like-minded individuals who would like to help us improve the lives of children in our community,” said Ray Duncan, who is also helping to organize the chapter.

An informational meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13 at the Appalachian Community Bank conference center in downtown Dawsonville.

As the world’s fourth largest civic service organization, Optimist Clubs offer scholarships, conduct mentoring and after-school programs, participate in childhood cancer initiatives and also  hold sports activities.

Each club is autonomous with volunteers deciding how to serve the needs of the children in their community.

The new Dawson County club will focus on the community’s youngest members, according to Duncan, who added the club is seeking input from local leaders to identify a specific need and purpose.
